The Black Star News is an investigative weekly newspaper (circ. 50,000) with an expanding online presence that now has 600,000 monthly unique visitors. We specialize in news that affects the African-American and African Diaspora.
We are looking for a Editorial Assistant who will report and write stories assigned to them as well as whatever they pitch to the editors. The articles will be published in the newspaper and online at www.blackstarnews.com.
Time commitment is 1 day a week from mid February to mid May. This internship is unpaid, but lunch is on us.
The internship requires knowledge of Content Management Systems, (basically prior experience with uploading written content and images to a website) and familiarity with Mac as well as PC.
The EA should also know how to operate and have access to digital still image cameras, as we cannot guarantee usage of BSN in house-equipment. In terms of the type of articles we are looking for: political news, entertainment, and profiles of movers and shakers in all industries and fields as well as ordinary folk.
The job also has some administrative components such as maintaining correspondence with readers, fact checking/editing written submissions and mindless address sourcing and data entry.
We hope to be able to provide a dynamic news environment and look forward to applications from candidates who are willing to work at a small but thriving publication.
