(PLEASE READ CAREFULLY and FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS) I am a very well-networked and experienced serial social entrepreneur, with a background at the highest levels of business, politics, academia, technology, and the non-profit sector. However, I am pulled in too many directions and need some assistance. I am about to start writing and/or editing a non-fiction book. I need a part-time assistant for 10-15 hours per week for approximately a few months (may be longer). I am at the stage where I need to narrow down the book topic, given several possibilities. The topic will probably have something to do with the future/21st century issues facing humanity (and possibly with a sci/tech connection, given my current job as head of a global association of the top scientists/technologists/innovators in the world). Once that topic decision is made (soon!), I will need someone to help keep me on track — given my other significant professional responsibilities — with us having regular meetings and you performing research/interviewing/note-taking to help organize the process and to speed it up. You: – are highly articulate and bright – are worldly/informed about world events/issues – are extremely organized/good note-taker/writer – are a confident online researcher/summarizer – like to learn and be mentored as you gain experience – like to have fun at work – are available and can afford to spend 10-15 flexible hours per week (unpaid), including a few hours of meeting on-site (Upper East Side)
NOTE: I am genuinely sorry that this is unpaid (at least at first), but my other projects have been too financially stressed all at once at the moment to subsidize the book work. I wish this wasn’t the case and I want to be direct about it. Hopefully, you will gain much else from the experience. I will strive to honor that goal. Please contact me with a cover letter and a resume. In your cover letter, please describe why this opportunity interests you, and why you feel you would be good at it. This is going to be INTERESTING.

GQ, the award-winning men’s magazine, is looking for editorial print interns for the fall 2009 time frame. The internship is an excellent opportunity to assist journalists who have worked and written for such publications as Vanity Fair, Esquire, Details, Entertainment Weekly, National Geographic, and Time Out New York. Previous interns have had the opportunity write for the publication and have even gone on to work for us post-grad. Interns must commit to work at least two days per week.
Selected interns will assist editors and writers, with the internship consisting of 50-percent editorial–research, reporting, some story-pitching/writing—and 50-percent administrative work (ie. transcribing interviews, running errands). Ideal applicants should be able to come in a minimum of three days a week and must possess excellent research skills, a positive can-do attitude, as well as a true affinity for the publication. This internship is unpaid, though credit, with a small stipend, is an option.
To apply, please send a cover letter, resume and a maximum of three published clips to _______. Specify in the subject line “Fall Internship Applicant” as well as your availability and potential start date.

My name is ________ and I’m a freelance journalist who works mainly for BBC News TV, radio and Online in New York. I’ve traveled all over the world for the BBC from Iraq, and Afghanistan to Sri Lanka and the Balkans.
Here’s a link to some of my stories on the BBC: ________
What I’m looking for:
This would be ideal for someone who wants to gain first hand experience of researching a story which will then be broadcast. You’ll be working towards producing programmes which will be broadcast on TV, radio and Online. Someone who can be flexible about work times, and is really keen. I don’t want reams of research. I want protagonists, interviewees, interesting places to film and record… challenging, but a great opportunity.
I’m looking for someone for approximately two days a week. Duration for commitment would be as long as it works out. There is no renumeration for this position.

Well, we can’t prove it, exactly, but we’re willing to bet that the dearth of dialogue in porn lately, as reported by (seriously) The New York Times, is related to an unwillingness to pay writers. It sounds a lot like what the Internet did to the print media: In porn’s case, when hand-held cams got cheap, amateur producers got tools, and they just skipped right over that writing stuff.
There does seem to be, however, a fantastic opportunity to leverage the free labor market: Unpaid “interns” (of course) could help develop the “themes” that have replaced porn’s plot and dialogue.

It doesn’t exist until tomorrow, but that’s not going to stop SalaryTK from pointing out the newest hot thing in unpaid journalism, per the New York Observer:
Its staff, led by Faster Times’ founding publisher and editor in chief Sam Apple, 33, will consist of several dozen editors and writers, including correspondents in 20 countries worldwide. At launch, the site will consist mainly of commentary, but somewhere down the line, Mr. Apple wants the Faster Times to offer original reporting….
“The staff will not be drawing salaries. Instead, writers will earn 75 percent of the revenue brought in through ads sold against their individual pages, while editors will get 10 percent of the revenue drawn from all the pages they oversee and be rewarded with a percentage of equity in the company.

Newsflash is an occasional item for quirky tidbits about unpaid labor and its consequences–regardless of whether the journalist writing the tidbit we quote gets paid or not.
Today, from an AP story about how a (grown up!) unpaid intern ended up embittered–and imprisoned:
A 40-year-old National Archives intern in Philadelphia stole 160 Civil War documents [from the Archive]. About half were sold on eBay. The documents included telegrams about the troops’ weaponry, the War Department’s announcement of Lincoln’s death sent to soldiers, and a letter from famed Confederate cavalryman James Ewell Brown Stuart.
A financially strapped Denning McTague was sentenced in the case to 15 months in prison in 2007. He had told a psychiatrist that he was angry that his internship was unpaid.
